Today has been an awesome day so far! This morning I got up and blogged a
bit. I went to the gym with Stephanie, after taking the weekend off. This is huge for me because when I disrupt a diet/exercise routine I don't go back.
Then we had a great lunch! I had a salad and my beloved potatoes (see previous blog) with some green beans and green bean salad. It was super delicious!! Most of all I enjoyed the company. Thanks Steph!!
Today while at the gym I decided I would beat my last goal. I walked 1.25
MILES in 33 minutes. I used a different treadmill this time and plugged my
weight into it and it said that I burned over 200 calories! Can I just tell you
how good that made me feel?? We made it all the way to the van when we realized I'd left my water bottle in the locker room. I didn't want to walk all the way back in there, but I did it and felt great about it afterwards.
For the first time in years I feel so proud of myself. I have energy, but emotionally things have changed. I am doing things I NEVER thought I would. I had visions of myself dying when I was in my thirties and it taking 12 men to carry my casket. I always felt disgusted with myself. I am coming out of my shell a bit, too. I wouldn't dare try to take all the credit for this. I am so
blessed to have God's help in all of this. Without Him I am nothing. Everything good that I do is because of Him. Praise be to God!! As my daughter Jewel-Anne would say "How lewie!"
This morning on the way to the gym I stopped by a friend's house and picked up some clothes that she had for me. I felt like it was Christmas again. So many clothes....So many clothes that FIT!!! There were a few pieces in my current size, but most of them were a size smaller and they fit! There were 3 things in two bags that didn't fit. That was a HUGE feel good moment for me!!
On a side note, totally unrelated, but my son peed in the potty this afternoon! He isn't even two years yet. My 2.5 year olds aren't even interested in potty training. I am so proud of him. Of course then the girls had to pee so they could get their candy.
Be blessed,

Day 4 - Positive Attitudes and Mashed Potatoes
Good Monday Morning to you all. I hope today finds you blessed! Today is
Day 4 of my program and I'm feeling really great. I feel refreshed when I wake
up in the morning. That is a totally new feeling. I believe that a positive
attitude is half the battle so I'm trying to stay as positive and uplifting as I
can for myself and others around me. I really am starting to enjoy working out.
I hate sweating, but I reward myself with a long hot shower afterwards and I
like those. My gym has the best water pressure. ;-)
Yesterday, I experienced the weirdest thing. I have been having dinner at
Shoneys each night. I can have a huge salad and a side for very few calories.
Last night I traded my soup for mashed potatoes with a little bit of gravy and
veggies. I was sure the mashed potatoes and gravy would blow up my calories for
the day, but it really didn't. My entire day was just at 800 calories. I was
very impressed. The one things that I really thought was funny is how good it
tasted. Shoney's isn't known for having the best mashed potatoes, but it was
like Heaven in my mouth. I have been really good the past 4 days eating very
little rich foods. Salads have been my main meals. I'm embracing my new life.
I spent over 28 years destroying my body. I didn't treat it like the
temple of God that I am commanded to do. I used and abused it. I ate whatever I
wanted, never exercised, and very emotionally bottled up. If I can do this then
anyone can. I was a huge couch potato. The first day I walked a half a mile.
Everyone probably thinks "well that's not very much" but let me tell you that is
probably more than I would walk in a week normally. I choose not to be that way
anymore. It's no longer an option. I want to live to see my great grandchildren
or even longer. All of the women in grandmother's family died at 74. My aunt
Flossie was the exception. She defied the odds. She was the only one of her
sisters who lived past 74. She lived to the nice age of 92. She was the picture
of health. I want to break the mold and outlive her. Before I was born God knew
the number of my days. I just don't want to do anything that is going to shorten
that!
For those of you out there reading this that are on your own weight loss
journey, please be encouraged. It is a journey that will be lived for the rest
of your life. You have to think of the long term. Starving yourself for a few
weeks won't fix it. Never eating another carb again won't fix it. None of the
fads diets will work because they are unrealistic. You have to be willing to
make healthier choices. Maybe you need to start small and say I'll cut out one
meal of fast food, or soda, or whatever it is that is your guilty pleasure. I
challenge you this week to change the way you look at yourself. Stop counting
your failures and start counting your successes! Be proud of yourself. Instead
of throwing a pity party when you fall, get back up and celebrate how far you've
come and then start walking (literally) again.

Reasons to Celebrate
WARNING: The rest of this blog will be TMI. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
In April, I bought a WiiFit. I can't express to you what a failure I felt like when I stepped on the board and it told me to get off and reset itself. I weighed too much! One of my goals was to be able to use this program. I was excited that in 26 pounds I'd be able to use it. John told me that I only had to be less than 330 pounds. I stepped on it this morning and thought Ok, I'll do the "run and just walk it." After two minutes I thought I was going to pass out. This was WAY harder than the treadmill at the gym. I also did some balance stuff.
When I was finished I discovered that I had started my period. I am fat. I have PCOS. I don't have periods. The last time I started my period was in June 2010. When I do have periods I usually have to take medication to make me start. The last time I had an unmedicated period was the cycle after I miscarried Michael. While this will put a cramp in my gym schedule this week I am so excited to know that things are going in the right direction.
It looks like I'm off to a great start to the new year. I hope your day is as blessed as mine has been so far!

Happy New Year Everyone!
Happy New Year everyone! At this time of year I always wake up sick from stuffing myself full of junk all night long. I knew this year would be different so I was able to plan a bit more. We had planned to spend New Year's Eve with the big boys playing Wii and board games.
Yesterday morning, I woke up with more energy than I knew what to do with.. We still haven't deep cleaned since Christmas so I asked John (my husband) which room he wanted to start with. He chose the living room. He swept, helped the kids pick up toys, and looked me and said "ok. Now where do we go?" I told him I wanted to move the TV and clean back there. He swept. I got up and told him I was going to wash the TV stand and I did. Then I started washing walls. We continued to make a loop around the wall of the living room, leaving the center of the room for last. We got to the end of the first wall and I told him I wanted to move the book shelves. It was at that point he decided I needed to go spend the day with my siblings, my friend Stephanie, or anyone else who would take me. LOL He was less than thrilled with my energy level. We moved the 3rd bookshelf on the second wall and it ended up breaking on us. The whole thing collapsed so we decided we'd do the rest of it tomorrow. That was one of the scariest things that has happened in my life! I immediately turned around and started counting kids to make sure no one was trapped under the shelf. My heart almost stopped.
I made a pot roast and potatoes for everyone to eat for dinner. That definitely isn't the most healthy dinner so I chose to go have my new "usual" cabbage soup and salad at Shoney's. I had fruit and cottage cheese for dessert. I felt full and only spent just under 700 calories for the meal. I still haven't brought myself to eat breakfast. I have never been a breakfast person. I know it would benefit me to do so, though. I'm working on it. I did a HUGE no no, though. Lunch time came and went. I was so busy cleaning that I forgot to eat anything at all. Dinner turned out to be my only meal of the day.
One of the issues I have with feeling so full all the time is that I just don't feel like eating. I've tried to force myself to eat but I usually only eat a couple bites before I feel like I'm going to get sick. My sisters have warned me about "starvation mode." While I want to avoid this I can only do the best I can do. I know eventually the pills will stop working so well. Then I will miss this feeling of not feeling hungry.
I was unsure if the gym was open yesterday. After I called them several times and got no answer I didn't go to the gym. I will go back on Monday and resume my routine.
Today is a day made of hangovers and resolutions. What resolutions did you make this year? Did you make resolutions that you will be able to keep or did you set yourself up for failure? Personally, I don't like resolutions because I never follow through with them. I suggest you take a look at your list and revise it. Rid yourself of the unrealistic expectations. Start small and build up. Make lifestyle changes that will benefit you the rest of your life.

The Mile
For years I made New Years Resolutions. Every year it was always the exact same thing! I would lose (insert insane number here) pounds during the next year. The result? By the 3rd week of January I had already fallen off the wagon and was so depressed because of my failure. By the end of the year I'd actually gained more weight than I started with.
My biggest obstacle is cooking. I like to have someone to talk to when I cook. Before mom died, she was always my cooking buddy. She'd come into the kitchen or sit in her bedroom (right off the kitchen) and we'd talk while I cooked. After she died, I lost the joy of cooking. That meant meals weren't as healthy because we were eating more junk and eventually we were eating out more than I was cooking. For 7 of us we were spending an insane amount of money eating out. TOTALLY crazy. I knew this, but I still had no desire to cook. I got to the point that even eating at some of my most favorite restaurants (The Melting Pot excluded) just didn't even have the appeal they once did. I grew to dislike food.
I am going to start cooking again this year. I will save lots of money. My biggest issue will be grocery shopping. I HATE grocery shopping. It takes forever then I come home and it takes forever to put things up. I think one of the reasons I dread it so much is because this was always another activity I did with Mama. I think John and I will start taking turns going to the grocery store.
I am so proud of myself for not waiting until January to start my journey. I don't want the NYR stigma attached to my journey. I am now on Day 4 of my medication. I woke up this morning feeling slightly energized! Normally, I wake up and feel like I could just go back to sleep. While I feel a little tired, I have a little energy, too.
My biggest accomplishment this week was that I started exercising. I went Thursday and walked half a mile and felt like I was dying. My chest hurt. My legs hurt. I felt like I was going to pass out. Yesterday, my goal was to walk 3/4 mile. I felt horrible. My chest still hurt so I slowed down a bit. I made it to a half mile and thought I'd never make my goal. By the time I made it to my goal, I was back up to the speed I wanted to be at. I wasn't feeling so bad so I kept walking. I made it a whole mile! I cannot tell you the last time I've walked a mile.
Dinner the last two nights was Shoney's salad and cabbage soup. It came in at just under 500 calories. All and all I'd say we'd call it a great couple of days. I'm really proud of myself.

My List
My list...
I saw a post on a friend's blog. She got the idea from one of her friends, and I loved it! For every pound lost, give a reason to have lost that pound! Here is my list so far.

December 28th - New Program
Today is the 3rd anniversary of my mother's death. My mom died at the young age of 61. She died 13 years younger than my grandmother was when she died. Following family tradition that puts me at dying in my 40s. That is NOT acceptable to me. My sister told me that she was going to give me and my children life for Christmas. She is paying for me to join a medical weight loss program. This morning was my first visit. I haven't been to the doctor in over a year. That also means I haven't had my diabetes medication in over 6 months either. My blood pressure was high because I was nervous and I almost didn't get to join the program because of it. They checked it again at the end of the visit and it was back down to my normal so they gave me the script I would need for this month. The receptionist was also able to put me in touch with a doctor who works with patients without insurance so the costs are low enough for me to afford them. I will be making an appt with him soon.
They weighed and measured me. We went over the program and then they prescribed Phentermine for me. I was given my instructions as to how to take it. I will work on increasing activity and decreasing my calorie intake. I was put on an 1800 calorie diet. Knowing how much I consume that seems so low, but I know I have to do this and I will. She told me it wouldn't be as hard as I think it will be. Of course I had all of the normal snide, sarcastic comments come to mind, but I didn't verbalize them. ;-)
This is where I need a lot of help from those around me. I need lots of warm fuzzies to keep me going. I need prayers and encouragement. I usually try things for a short while then give up. This time I will be held accountable, though. When I am down, please lift me up. If God puts me on your mind, please say a prayer and then let me know you were thinking of me.
My first goal was lose 5 lbs. I have done that so my next goal will be to lose 10% of my original weight 36 lbs. I am almost there. I will reach that goal before my next appt.
Now for the important details
Starting Wt: 360
Today's Wt: 326
Today's Loss: 34
Total Loss: 34 (I didn't realize I had lost that much)
Goal #2 Progress: 34lbs
Mini Goal 2: Lose 36 lbs.
For those of you walking this journey with me, thank you!
Until next time...Lisa
